Food and Drug Law: FDA Jurisdictions

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has undertaken the task of protecting, promoting, and enhancing the health of the American public. FDA started out with very little power; but over the years its authority has evolved and increased as a result of the establishment of various laws and regulations. These laws and regulations have increased FDA’s jurisdiction, empowering it to regulate foods, drugs, medical devices, biological products, and cosmetics. In this course the learner is introduced to the legal jurisdiction of FDA and the responsibilities and limits assigned by Congress to FDA. This course will focus on the scope and limits of FDA jurisdiction, and how products are regulated within the different industries. In addition, the responsibilities of FDA regarding foods, drugs, medical devices, human biological products, and cosmetics are explored in some detail.
