Drugs in the Workplace: Danger and Usage

This lesson examines the impact of drug usage in the workplace, and discusses the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988. After completing this lesson, the learner will recognize the impact of drug and alcohol abuse on individual job performance and how it compromises workplace safety. The learner will also recognize requirements for the types of drug testing, as well as the consequences of violating company drug and alcohol abuse policies. Finally, the learner will be introduced to the health effects of marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol abuse, as well as the purpose of Employee Assistance Programs.

Drugs in the Workplace: Responsibilities and Guidelines

This lesson addresses the supervisory responsibilities outlined in the Department of Transportation (DOT), Title 49 Part 199, Drug and Alcohol Testing, that govern reasonable cause drug testing. After completing this course, the individual should be able to recognize: the correct procedures to follow when a covered individual is called for drug testing, indicators of illegal drug use in a covered individual, how to report suspected drug abuse, and the physical characteristics and effects of marijuana, cocaine, opiates (such as morphine, codeine, and heroin), and phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines.

Drugs in the Workplace: Testing and Guidelines

This lesson explains the DOT requirements for drug testing outlined in 49 CFR Part 199 and 49 CFR Part 40. After completing this lesson, the learner will be able to identify: the types of jobs for which drug tests are administered, the individuals involved in the drug testing procedure, steps in the testing process including how specimens are handled, and what happens when a test result is positive.
